DCA and TELERADIOLOGY
We have always endeavored to be a part of all high-end technological advancements in radiology and diagnostics. In the same endeavor we have also taken a leap into the teleradiology. Our endeavor in teleradiology is through one of our sister concerns by the name “RADNET”. We are already active in certain projects in Nagaur and are also in deliberations with certain international hospitals and diagnostic centers for future expansion in this regard.
RADNET has an established Teleradiology infrastructure already operational with high-end equipment and we are using highly advanced software at our K.G Marg Center. We are also having a 512 kbps high-speed lease line connection for the proper flow of data from one center to another. With such kind of infrastructure we have been able to reduce the turnaround time with respect to the reporting and hence are also in a position to utilize the existing infrastructure more efficiently.
Definition of Teleradiology
Teleradiology is a means of electronically transmitting radiographic patient images and consultative text from one location to another. In medical sciences, this technology involves creating and transmitting medical images, such as X-rays, CT scans and MRI scans electronically in the form of a digital signal from one location to another. Teleradiology is the process of sending radiologic images from one point to another through digital, computer-assisted transmission, typically over standard telephone lines, wide area network (WAN), or over a local area network (LAN). An expert at a distant site receives the images, evaluates them, diagnosis them, and suggests additional care as needed.

Uses
Potential and actual users of teleradiology systems include:
- Radiologists on call. In this application, the on call radiologist uses a portable teleradiology receiving station at home. Patient images are transmitted from the hospital (or clinic) to the physician's home for immediate review. This allows instantaneous consultation of the radiologist referring physician.
- Hospital Physicians. ICU patient images taken (or developed) in the Radiology Department can be quickly transmitted to the ICU for review by the team responsible for that patient's care. Physicians or other health care providers at other sites who a re involved in an individual patients care, can also view the images.
- Primary care and rural physicians. A rural primary care physician can send patient images taken in the clinic to a radiologist in a distant location for reading and consultation.
- Physicians requiring remote subspecialty radiology consultations. A community hospital radiologist can send a complete set of images to a remote radiologist who is a sub-specialist (i.e. pediatric radiologist).
The Future
Teleradiology will develop rapidly in three key areas. Firstly, sub-specialty consultation will develop on an established base. This will enable general radiologists to avail themselves of skills in specialties such as neuroradiology or pediatric radiology.(ref 3,4) Secondly, interactive ultrasound imaging will facilitate the performance of examinations in health centers, general practice surgeries, and satellite hospitals under the distant supervision of a consultant radiologist.
Finally, the role of inexpensive personal computer based systems in providing emergency radiology cover outside normal working hours is likely to expand. The temptation to provide an on call service from home to several hospital sites will become irresistible to increasingly financially competitive hospital trusts.
Teleradiology is already impinging on everyday practice, but rapid expansion, driven by an ongoing desire for increasing cost effectiveness, will be seen in the near future. It is no longer a fairytale dream but a useful tool to be used for greater benefit of patients.
